The King's Theatre, Stratford (List No. 9865)

This is a story from our monthly newsletter, Heritage this Month.

David Watt | Stratford, Taranaki

In recognition of its rich history, The King's Theatre, Stratford has been listed as a Category 1 historic place on the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero.

This cinematic icon, built in 1917, holds a special place in the hearts of Taranaki residents and further afield, as the birthplace of 'talkies' – the groundbreaking moment in 1925 when movies seamlessly merged sound with moving images for the first time in Australasia.

Already a cherished landmark in Taranaki, the theatre has long enjoyed protection under the district plan. Now, with its formal inclusion on the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero, the King's Theatre's heritage values are further recognised.

Blyss Wagstaff, Senior Heritage Assessment Advisor based in our Wellington team, is thrilled at the significant public response to the listing, with 103 submissions demonstrating the affection the community holds for this cultural gem.

Blyss shares, "The outpouring of love and nostalgia for The King's Theatre is a testament to its significance. Fond memories of cinematic and stage experiences were shared by many, with some attributing their lifelong love for the performing and cinematic arts to their time at The King's.

Others voiced a collective desire to see more of New Zealand's older theatres preserved."

Acknowledging the proactive efforts of the Stratford District Council, Blyss commends the foresight in protecting The King's Theatre on the district plan years ago.

"Special heritage places like this endure because of the dedication of those who care for them. My gratitude also goes out to the Stratford District Theatre Trust, volunteers, and sponsors who tirelessly uphold the theatre's legacy. I hope this national heritage recognition helps them feel the huge public support for all their hard work.”

As the pioneer home of the 'talkies’, The King's Theatre played a pivotal role in shaping the recreational entertainment landscape of the early 20th century.

Its influence continues to reverberate through popular culture today, making it not just a historic site but a vital and beloved cornerstone of Stratford's cultural life. Whether hosting film screenings or live performances, the King's Theatre stands as testament to the enduring power of storytelling and entertainment.
